A genetic deficiency in the muscle protein dystrophin causes the more common forms of muscular dystrophy. –Physiotherapist- Rajarajan.

‘A genetic deficiency in the muscle protein dystrophin causes the more common forms of muscular dystrophy’ said Physiotherapist Rajarajan, of SEVAI Myopathy centre situated in SEVAI Allur in Trichy. Physiotherapist Deivakumar while addressing the special educators for disabled children for all disabilities added that SEVAI had identified 132 persons affected by muscular dystrophy in Trichy District and it is important that special educators and parents are to know the biggest key to dealing with this illness is knowledge and to work closely with the doctor, physiotherapists to best manage symptoms and Treatment can help the patient stay as functional as possible for as long as possible. Physiotherapist Deivakumar added “nearly everyone has heard of muscular dystrophy. Many people likely do not know what causes the condition. It is important to know about this disorder, to learn the cause, to find out about the symptoms, to find out how muscular dystrophy is diagnosed and to learn what can be done to treat the condition. Muscular dystrophy is an inherited group of diseases in which muscle tissue is very susceptible to damage. This results in the muscles getting progressively weaker. In the later stages of the condition, fat and connective tissue often will replace muscle tissue. Sometimes some forms of muscular dystrophy causes problems of the heart, other organs and involuntary muscles. Muscular dystrophy is an inherited illness. Each form of the condition results from a different specific genetic mutation. A genetic deficiency in the muscle protein dystrophin causes the more common forms of muscular dystrophy. The genes for both Duchenne's and Becker's muscular dystrophy are passed from mother to son. Occasionally the defect is new and not passed from the mother. Some other types can be passed from generation to generation and affect both sexes. Still others will only manifest if the gene comes from both mother and father. There are many possible symptoms of muscular dystrophy. These symptoms can vary by type. General symptoms may include muscle weakness, lack of coordination. Progressive crippling resulting in contractures, other symptoms are more specific to the type of muscular dystrophy the person has. The symptoms particular to Duchenne's muscular dystrophy are frequent falls, large calf muscles, trouble when rising from sitting or lying down, weakness in the lower legs, gait is abnormal and mild mental retardation. These symptoms appear around age two or three. These patients are often unable to walk by late childhood. Most die in their 20s or 30s due to complications. In myotonic muscular dystrophy, the muscle weakness of other dystrophies is present as is muscle stiffness. This form often isn't evident until adulthood. Symptoms include weakening of voluntary muscles that control arms and legs, weak muscles in the neck, Muscles involved in breathing and swallowing get weaker, other muscle. There is no cure for any form of muscular dystrophy. There are many treatments, including physical therapy, medications, assistive devices, surgery”.
Physiotherapist Rajarajan further said “Duchenne muscular dystrophy is inherited in an X-linked recessive pattern. A disease is considered X-linked if the defective gene that causes the condition is located on the X chromosome. Duchenne muscular dystrophy is usually passed from mother to son through one of the mother's genes. The mother passes on the defective DMD gene which is located on the X chromosome. Boys inherit an X chromosome from their mother and a Y chromosome from their father. Girls inherit an X chromosome from their mother and an X chromosome from their father. The X-Y or X-X combination is what determines the sex of a child. Males have one Y and one X chromosome; a defective copy of the X chromosome will likely cause muscular dystrophy. Females have two X chromosomes; a defective mutation must be present in both copies of the X gene to cause muscular dystrophy. If a female has one defective gene and one unaffected gene, they usually will not experience symptoms. The unaffected X gene usually will produce enough dystrophin to keep the muscles working effectively. However, there are a few females with one defective gene who experience mild muscle weakness and fatigue symptoms. These females usually exhibit very mild muscular weakness and usually do not have any other long-term complications. The sons of female carriers (women who have one defective DMD gene) each have a 50% chance of having the disease. The daughters of female carriers each have a 50% chance of becoming carriers. Approximately two thirds of all individuals with Duchenne muscular dystrophy inherit the defective gene from their mother. The other one third usually develops a new mutation of the DMD”-Govin

SEVAI Women Community College, Arumbuhalnagar is a boon to women learners of rural areas

In India Women comprise the largest section of the underprivileged group and continue to shoulder all domestic responsibilities and face restrictions in the form of traditional patriarchal attitudes. The Vocational Education Programmes through distance mode has been imparted primarily for women learners who had to discontinue their studies for financial or other reasons and also who stay in rural areas. It also paves a way for those who want to continue learning after marriage to improve their social and economic status. At present the number of women students has considerably increased, thanks to the Open and Distance Learning which women find convenient, economical and beneficial. Nearly 90% of the learners, after completion of the vocational education, are employed in relevant industries. The competency and skills of the women learners has increased as per the feedback given by the women learners. Each and every learner enrolled has to study two compulsory courses, namely, 'Life coping Skills' and 'Communication Skills'. These two courses are specifically designed to develop the competency level of a person and improve their communicative skills. The employment opportunities in Community Colleges after successful completion of Vocational Education Programmes are good.  SEVAI women community college learners are sent to various industries for internship during the course by the Community Colleges. Observing the competency and skills of these learners during internship, these industries then offer suitable job opportunities.  Once the course is completed, the women learners have many opportunities on hand, namely:   Becoming an entrepreneur by opening her own firm with the practical knowledge gained from related programme,b)   Grabbing an opportunity in the same firm where she has undergone internship training, Getting employed in an organisation, relevant to her study.  There are opportunities for the women in this institute in this rural region to continue their higher education under distance education mode of recognized universities and studies such as under graduation, post graduation in Arts, science, management and computer studies are possible under this distance mode.-Govin

Trees are major assets to maintain the world Environment-Dr.K.Govindaraju

Trees planted in SEVAI watershed region as green coverage
Trees are major assets and they are on the job 24 hours every day working for all of us to improve our environment and quality of life. Possible management implications of these estimates are that air pollutant uptake benefits from tree planting may be optimized by planting in areas where air pollutant concentrations are elevated and where relatively high planting densities can be achieved. Heat from Earth is trapped in the atmosphere due to high levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other heat-trapping gases that prohibit it from releasing heat into space. Trees remove (sequester) CO2 from the atmosphere during photosynthesis to form carbohydrates that are used in plant structure/function and return oxygen back to the atmosphere as a byproduct. Trees therefore act as a carbon sink by removing the carbon and storing it as cellulose in their trunk, branches, leaves and roots while releasing oxygen back into the air. One tree that shades your home in the city will also save fossil fuel, cutting CO2 buildup as much as 15 forest trees. Trees also remove other gaseous pollutants by absorbing them with normal air components through n the leaf surface' said Dr.K.Govindaraju,Chairman of South Zone Board of Continuing Education. He further said  "The United Nations Environment Programme has announced that India will be the global host of World Environment Day 2011 (WED) on 5 June, with year's theme 'Forests: Nature at Your Service' underscores the intrinsic link between quality of life and the health of forests and forest ecosystems. The socio-economic pressures on Indian forests are tremendous, India has instituted a tree-planting system to combat land-degradation and desertification, including windbreaks and shelterbelts to protect agricultural land. World Environment Day 2011 will emphasize how individual actions can have an exponential impact, with a variety of activities ranging from school tree-planting drives to community clean-ups, car-free days, photo competitions on forests, bird-watching trips, initiatives, exhibits, green petitions, nationwide green campaigns and much more.SEVAI, a Trichy based NGO plans to celebrate World Environment Day 2011 in its Marutham Premises of Sirugamani of Trichirappalli District of India. The day's program is to give a human face to environmental issues; Empower local people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development; Promote an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues; Advocate partnership which will ensure all neighbourhoods and people enjoy a safer and more prosperous future. The goals of this SEVAI organisation are to develop local population that is aware of and concerned about, total environment and its associated problems, and commitment to work individually and collectively towards solution of current problems.
World Environment Day is an excellent concept that is much needed due to today’s negative environmental impact on our planet. Every individual gains benefits by participating in their ideas. Our planet is changing at a fast pace and without intervention our society will use up all the resources that we use to function. Our planet is not replaceable and in order to leave behind a planet that is habitable for future generations, societies the world over must work together to improve the quality of our planet. Participating in World Environment Day is a good first step to achieve the necessary goals of environmental protection to improve the quality of environment, to create awareness among the people on environmental problems and conservation, and to create an atmosphere so that people participate in decision making and develop the capabilities to evaluate the developmental programmes. World Environment Day seeks to bring to all a heightened awareness and understanding of the environment and the problems that besiege it.  This is really important on many levels.  One way this is important is that it starts with the premise of disseminating information.  For a concern like the environment, this is critical for if one possesses the information needed, understanding how the environment can be helped, action might not be very far behind.  Another way this is important is that it helps to build solidarity and collective action.  The more people can assume this point of view in their perception of any cause, in this case environmental consciousness, the better chance local action can spurn into greater effects. The main aim of the International Environmental Day is to remember us of our "Existence". It means the dependency of mankind on our earth planet and our relationships, responsibilities towards protecting, saving our Oxygen, without which we can’t live'. -Govin

Jasmine Perfume Industry, if established, will be a boon for Srirangam area Jasmine plantation growers.

Jasmine Perfume Industry, if established, will be a boon for Srirangam area Jasmine plantation growers. Jasmine is native to Himalayan valleys and certain areas of southern India, Malliampathu and certain villages in Andanallur Block of Siriangam of Trichy District women Self Help Groups cultivate Jasmine Plantation. Jasmine seedlings grow slowly, so cultivated jasmine is propagated from growing tip cuttings with several nodes and one leaf. Natural suckers can also be propagated. The cuttings are treated with a soluble salts rooting solution and rooted in equal parts of sand, vermiculite and moss. After 120 days, the cuttings are set into open-ploughed fields, growing in pits evacuated to 4 feet. The lower depth of the pit is filled with a mixture of rotted manure, sand and soil, and the upper half is filled with top soil. During the first year, the young plants are pinched to encourage bushy branching, since blooms set on both terminal and axillaries tip. Pruning begins in the second year, to eliminate suckers, old growth, basal branches, and any trailing branches and to encourage fresh shoots and increase the number of blooms. Upper branches are pruned to 4 feet above ground level. Larger commercial operations use defoliants instead of pruning. Organic manure is applied after pruning, but too much manure encourages vegetative growth over blooms. Flowers can set as early as 90 days after a cutting is rooted, but stable economic yield from jasmine begins in the third year and continues at least until the twelfth year before yield declines. If flowers are harvested for floral garlands, the closed buds are harvested during the night before market. For perfume production, fully opened flowers are harvested near dawn. Jasmine is one of the few picked flowers that continue to develop fragrance, as much as 36 hours after harvest.
Jasmine’s place in the perfumery industry is obvious. The word “perfume” works like magic, Just look around perfume section in any department store or mall and we can see what a truism this is. The word perfume comes from the Latin phrase, “per” meaning “through” and “fumus” meaning “smoke”. In the 21st century, Egypt still holds a prominent place in essential oil production for perfumes and is responsible for a significant portion of the world’s jasmine production. Today, perfumes are becoming many layered, with diverse notes, overtones and undertones unheard of before. It was only in the 20th century that scents and designer perfumes were really mass produced. Before that, the few trade names that existed were Coty and Yardley who made fairly light perfumes with familiar flowery scents. Today’s fragrances are artfully crafted by perfumers who are trained in centuries old traditions that hark back to the Renaissance. Currently perfume had become a $10 billion industry in world wide. Andanallur is an area where most jasmine plantation has been done by women self- help group members and this area produces the jasmine flower. It is a labour intensive process for collecting the jasmine flowers. It is significant to note that the women farming communities of Jamine Plantation made a representation to present Chief Minister of Tamilnadu Ms.J.Jayalaithaa during her election campaign in this region, for setting up a jasmine perfume Industry in this region for enhanced income for this region. Sources confirm that consultations are in progress in Chennai in this regard of setting of a Jasmine perfume industry in Trichy and this is good news for the women SHGs and the population of Trichy District.-Govin
