Trichy District Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) “Anaivarukkum Kalvi Thittam” in collaboration with one of its partner NGOs of Trichy, SEVAI has organized a 10 days campaign mode on creating awareness on identification of the left over differently abled children in 10 blocks of Trichy District. As per the guidance of Mrs.Jayashree Muralidharn, the District Programme Coordinator of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan of Trichy District, Mrs.Agastin Peter Fatima flagged off the campaign for the year 2011-12 in August 2011 with due support of Additional District Programme Coordinator, Mr.Ramachandran and IED District Coordinator of SSA, Mr.Gunalan and other Department staff members. The SAVAI- NGO coordinator Mr.R, Deivakumar and his team created the awareness campaign in 10 allotted Blocks of Trichy district namely Andanallur, Lalgudi, Manachanallur, and Trichy West, Trichy Urban, Musiri, Thiruvermbur Manikandam and Thuraiyur. The awareness building focused on identification of all differently abled children in these 10 blocks, enabling these children to avail all the government services to the needy people, creating self confidence and empowerment of differently Abled children, created positive attitude among the peer group of the differently abled children and provided moral support to the Parents of the differently abled children. Additional chief educational officer- SSA, Assistant program officer-SSA, Block supervisors, BRTEs, ICDS officers, SEVAI coordinator, Physiotherapists, Special educators, Parents of differently abled children, Self help group members and Vazhikattum thittam volunteers were directly involved in the awareness building campaign. The Methodology used for awareness Campaign were Procession with awareness Banners and placards to sensitize general public about disability, distribution of Handouts and posters with awareness information, Cultural events to create awareness among SHG and Parents of disabled children,orgnanised Street play, Puppet shows, Awareness Meeting conducted of parents and SHG members about the Prevention Cases and after care of disabled children and Created awareness about the availability of government schemes and other welfare measures. So far the entire team identified 3974 target aged group differently abled children and enrolled 2750 children in regular schools, 40 children in Special Residential Bridge Course, extend home based services to 1032 children, enrolled 143 children in day care centres and conducted medical camp and screened 1364 children, supported 567 children in obtaining identification cards, ortho appliances for 567 children and organized corrective surgery for 90 children with disability.-Govin
