sense of balance and well being.SEVAI Special School was started with 30
children in 2004 all coming from low income families. In the school all
facilities and training are absolutely free. Having a baby is the happiest
thing in a marriage but not, if the child is in any way less than 100% perfect.
And a child, a special child, one of God's own child in other words a mentally challenged
child. Most parents can never recover from the shock of having such a baby. Mental
retardation refers to substantial limitations in present functioning. As many
as 3 out of every 100 children in the country have mental retardation .It is
characterized by significantly sub average intellectual functioning, existing
concurrently with related limitations in two or more adaptive skills areas:
communication, self care, home living, social skills, community use, self
direction, health and safety, functional academics, leisure, and work. Most
children with mental
retardation can learn to do many things. It just takes
them more time and effort than other children In SEVAI School situated in
Arumbuhalnagar, the faculty of this school gives training to children with
mentally challenged in Daily living skills, such as getting dressed, going to
the bathroom, and feeding one's self, Communication skills, such as
understanding what is said and being able to answer; Social skills with peers,
family members, adults, and others. For children up to age three, services are
provided through an early intervention system. SEVAI Staff members work with
the child's family to develop individualized family services which emphasizes
the unique needs of the family, so that parents and other family members know
how to help their young child with mental retardation. . A child with mental
retardation does well in school but is likely to need individualized help. Many
children with mental retardation need help with adaptive skills, which are
skills needed to live, work, and play in the community. Teachers and parents help
a child work on these skills at both school and home. Children take longer to
learn to speak, walk, and take care
of their personal needs such as dressing or
eating. They have trouble learning in school. Learning takes them longer,
require more repetition, and there may be some things they cannot learn. The
extent of the limits of learning is a function of the severity of the
disability. Nevertheless, virtually every child is able to learn, develop, and
grow to some extent. The grown up children are given vocational training in flower
and kitchen gardening as gardening is well recognized for mental and health
benefits of these children. Gardening can have a positive impact on physical,
mental and emotional well-being and is useful in helping people with special needs.
Gardening improves strength, endurance and flexibility, helping to prevent
problems such as obesity and osteoporosis. Gardening can also stimulate the
appetite and foster a good night's sleep. Gardening can also help with the
development of social and intellectual skills, a garden can provide an oasis of
calm and somewhere peaceful to escape to, helping restore a sense of balance
and well-being. A healthier diet is also generally a by-product of gardening.
