SEVAI, in partnership with OFI France-Alstom Foundation, successfully renovated two tanks in 2025, enhancing water conservation efforts in these watershed areas. The renovated tanks, Nottakarankuttai (Perur Village, Gudalur Panchayat) and Sokkankulam (Thirumalaireddipatty), aimed to boost groundwater recharge, improve water availability, and support local ecosystems.
*Key Achievements:*
The project achieved significant milestones, including the renovation of two tanks with construction of 1 recharge shaft, 2 gully plug structures, and feeding and leading channels in each tank. Additionally, 1 check dam was constructed at Nottakarankuttai. A total of 1,000 tree saplings were planted, with 500 saplings in each tank area.
The project has resulted in numerous benefits, including water conservation, improved crop yield, food security, soil health, climate resilience, and livelihood support. The harvest of rainwater reduces runoff and increases groundwater recharge, while recharged wells provide reliable irrigation, boosting crop productivity.
*Project Benefits:*
- Water Conservation: Harvests rainwater, reducing runoff and increasing groundwater recharge
- Improved Crop Yield: Recharged wells provide reliable irrigation, boosting crop productivity
- Food Security: Enhanced water availability ensures stable food production, even in dry spells
- Soil Health: Water bodies reduce soil erosion, improve soil moisture, and support vegetation
- Climate Resilience: Helps mitigate drought impacts and supports local ecosystems
- Livelihood Support: Benefits farmers, promoting economic stability and rural development
*Implementation:*
The project involved careful site selection, regular maintenance, and community engagement. Local communities were involved in construction and maintenance, ensuring sustainability.
*Impact and Follow-up:*
The project has positively impacted the local community, enhancing water security, improving crop yields, and supporting ecosystem health. Regular monitoring and maintenance of recharge structures are recommended, along with expansion of similar projects to other areas.
The successful completion of this project demonstrates the effectiveness of collaborative efforts in enhancing water conservation and promoting sustainable development 🌂.
