Decades ago, in the rugged terrains of Kolli Hills, a young and dynamic Youth Coordinator, Shri. K. Velayutham, led from the front.
With a spirited team of 100 youth volunteers, he carved a road out of nothing — cutting through rocks and stones with bare hands and sheer willpower. In just 10 days, they opened a pathway where there was none, connecting isolated villages to the world.
It was a time when there was not even a road to reach the camp.
Moved by this extraordinary feat, the District Collector of Salem, Mr. Farooqi, along with his team, trekked to the campsite at night, guided only by the flickering light of Deevatties — the traditional emergency lamps. There, under that night sky, he addressed and honoured the youth for their remarkable service.
It was truly a vibrant, visionary, and vigorous chapter of youth service — an unforgettable saga of Kolli Hills.
Even today, after two decades of retirement, Shri. K. Velayutham continues his tireless service to society with the same vigour and commitment.
*A road was laid then in the hills. A legacy of selfless service continues even now.*Govin
