Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu, Vice President of India conferred Doctor of Literature (Honoris Causa) upon to two trustees of Gandhi gram.

The Gandhigram Rural Institute in their 34th convocation conferred Doctor Of Science (Honoris Causa) on DR.R. KOUSALYA devi and doctor of literature (honoris causa) onSmt. KRISHNAMMAL JEGANATHAN, two of Gandhi gram trustees who inherited the vision of the founder Dr. (Mrs.) T.S. Soundaram AMMA and worked actively for the empowerment of women, and eradicating poverty and disease. The award was handed over by Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu in

the esteemed presence of the Dr.KM.Annamalai, Chancellor and Dr. S.Natarajan, Vice- Chancellor and other members. It is note worthy to know that Krishnammal Jagannathan (born 16 June 1926) is a Social activist from Tamilnadu. Her work includes upliftment of the landless, and the poor; she has sometimes fought against governments as well as big industries. She was earlier involved in the Indian Independence Movement, along with her husband, and was also a close associate of Vonoba Bhave. She has received several awards,Dr. R. Kousalya Devi the senior most gynecologist at the Kasturba Hospital in Chinnalapatti near Dindigul, serves as one of the Trustees of Gandhigram Trust, the apex body, Kousalya Devi initially came to this rural hospital in Tamil Nadu on a two-year deputation, quitting a secure government job, on the request of its founder, Dr. T. Soundaram, a disciple of Mahatma Gandhi and the daughter of eminent industrialist T.V.S. Sundaram Iyengar.Under Kausalya Devi’s stewardship, the the Kasturba Hospital has won the State Award 14 times and the National Award twice for its contribution to family welfare services. -Kris
