Senior citizens are Pride of our Nation and they need Day Activity Centres not Day Care Centres- Dr.T.Nagender Swamy.

Dr.T.Nagender Swamy addresses in the Seminar

Speaking in a Seminar in Trichy on 18th November organized by South Zone Board of Continuing Education on Inclusive Development and Continuing Education, Eminent Social Scientist Dr.T.Nagender Swamy of Villages in Partnership, Telungana State said that Senior citizens are Pride of our country, not the burden of the country. Senior citizens are important because of their long accumulated knowledge, experience, and wisdom, if given the opportunity, they have much to teach us and they can be helpful in our applying lessons of life, e.g. self esteem, self respect, self discipline” Dr.T.Nagender Swamy added, “Inclusive development is a pro-people-oriented approach that equally values and incorporates the contributions of all stakeholders including marginalized groups in addressing development issues. The senior citizens consist of a valuable reservoir of such human resource as is gifted with knowledge of

various sorts, varied experiences and deep insights. It is observed that as life expectancy rises disproportionately due to medical and welfare facilities, senior citizens are treated as a burden on the economy rather than the assets that they could be.
They can provide cohesion with tradition and bring together conflicting movements for ‘special causes’. We must see them as being worthy of respect because in the course of their lives they’ve earned our gratitude because of the ways in which their individual actions have contributed to society as a whole. The population of the elderly persons has been increasing over the years. Ageing is a natural process, which inevitably occurs in human life cycle. It brings with it a host of challenges in the life of the elderly, which are mostly engineered by the changes in their body, mind, thought process and the living patterns. One could witness the enthusiasm and energy of the senior citizens as they celebrate the day that belonged to them. May be they have formally retired, yet a devastating majority of them are physically fit and mentally alert. The elderly are becoming the fastest growing, but underutilized resource available to humanity. Rather than putting them aside, physically (and mentally), to be cared for separately, they should be integrated into the lives of communities where they can make a substantial contribution to improving social conditions. We need not have the day care centre for senior citizens but we need Day Activity Centre for senior citizens. We all owe senior citizens our

respect and gratitude as individuals.” Dr.Swamy concluded his speech by saying, “The
term inclusive development has emerged in the current century its roots, however, can be traced to different concepts in different disciplines. Inclusive development as only combining social aspects with economic growth through political approaches, but also inclusive development has focus on social well-being and protecting the Eco-system   of nature. This term can potentially bridge different disciplines together. This Seminar on the term inclusive development needs to present a guiding framework for examining how different disciplines deal with inclusive
