"Empowering Small Farmers Through Scientific Tapioca Cultivation: DESWOS–SEVAI Initiative in Thottiyapatty, K.N. Palayayam Cluster"*
Tapioca Cultivation under DESWOS–SEVAI Project.
Thottiyapatty, K.N. Palayayam Cluster, Tamil Nadu – 2026*
In a significant stride toward sustainable rural livelihoods, tapioca   has been successfully harvested in Thottiyapatty village of the K.N. Palayayam cluster under the agriculture initiative supported by DESWOS Germany through SEVAI, Tamil Nadu. As part of this agro-development project, both men and women farmers from small and marginal households were provided comprehensive training in scientific tapioca cultivation practices, covering land preparation, disease-resistant sett selection, integrated nutrient and pest management, and post-harvest handling. The intervention focused on enhancing productivity of cassava while ensuring climate resilience and soil health through intercropping and organic inputs. With assured market linkages facilitated by SEVAI, the tapioca produced in this cluster now serves as a stable income source for farming families, especially women self-help group members who are actively engaged in value addition such as tapioca chips and javvarisi processing. This DESWOS-supported initiative not only revives traditional tuber crop cultivation in the region but also strengthens food security, empowers women farmers, and demonstrates a replicable model of NGO-backed, community-led agricultural transformation in semi-arid zones of Tamil Nadu.-Govin🌿
