“Making every day science fun is to get everyone in our school involved”-Student Sofia of SEVAI Shanthi Matriculation Higher Secondary School.

Sofia shares her experience in her school
This is the lean time for school as we are expecting class books in three weeks time as per the Government policy. However, this time is useful for making a strong bridge course in our school complying with the interim school time table for this course and science for everyday life becomes an important topic. A student of SEVAI Shanthi Matriculation higher Secondary school, Sofia a secondary class student said ‘the school administration strictly follows the topics as per time table prescribed by the education department authorities for the bridge course for students. Sofia is very much involved the topic Science for everyday life and said “in the first way of making science fun was to get everyone in our school get involved. One day when it was nice weather the selected members of class was taken for a filed visit to Sirugamani Marutham centre. Along the way point out different things and asked our class mates questions. Then went home and research things we saw on our field visit. I found out the science behind what our peers saw along their travel. For instance if they saw red soil or something like that found out what causes soils to be red, we try to incorporate things into science that you know will spark an interest in our class. The second way of making science fun was to show an interest in it. We had set up a science project night to show our peers we are interested in learning more about science. If our school sees that I was not interested in science they are not going to show much interest. But if we act like we want to learn more about the earth or the stars or whatever it is. Your school had a better chance of wanting to learn more. We just made sure that you show interest. This was helpful to our school be more excited about science and what it has to offer. The reason our school will be more excited about science is because they can relate with you about what they are doing in science and will know that you are interested and want to hear what they have to say. The third way of making science fun was to figure out different ways of doing something. For example we wanted to learn more about fish. We school pupils with teachers went to Amoor fishpond  and look at all of the fish then go and do some research and figure out why certain fish are the way they are. This was helpful make science fun because we and my school are actually getting into it and finding out more”.
Sofia further added “The fourth way of making science fun was to do hands on experiments and science projects. We wanted to learn about the wind and how it affects things. Got a kite and get our class out and fly it. We had to fly the kite in different kinds of winds and then do some research. This was helpful to us to relate things to science that you are learning by actually taking the time to do it. This is a way to make science fun. The fifth way of making science fun is to discuss science while doing science projects, before an outing, after seeing science in action, etc. We discussed the outcomes of science projects that we do together. If we take the time to discuss science it was more fun because our peers were more excited about what they were learning. There are many ways to make science fun and we had incorporated science ideas into our school activities. Our school knows that we are teaching them about science because we are having fun. They will just think that we planned a school activity. We made sure to keep it light and fun and not stressful and boring. It is very important that our peers learn as much as we can about science. Learning as much as we can, when it comes to science will help us in our daily lives. Science helps with problem solving and other skills that our peers need. Thus we make science as fun as we can”’.-Govin
