SEVAI Shanthi Matriculation Higher Secondary School students spent time outdoors in learning about their environment. P.Chitra, Principal of the School invited several members of the SEVAI Gardeners, Coordinators of Watershed project of SEVAI to come to SEVAI Shanthi Matriculation Higher Secondary School to teach the students how to properly grow trees and care for them.  Students had the opportunity to actually plant trees on the SEVAI Shanthi Matriculation Higher Secondary School campus while learning personally the importance of growing trees. The coordinators of Forestry and watershed program of SEVAI enlightened the students “Trees conserve energy in the summer, and save money. Trees help clear the air. Trees produce the oxygen we breathe, and reduce air pollution by lowering air temperature, through respiration, and by retaining particulates. Trees bring songbirds close by. Birdsong will fill the air as trees provide nesting sites, food, and cover for countless species. Trees around your home can increase its value by up to 15% or more. Trees help clean our rivers and streams. Trees hold the soil in place and reduce polluted runoff into our waterways. Trees conserve energy in the winter. Trees fight global warming. As they grow, trees remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, the major contributor to global warming. Trees make your School, and your neighborhood, more beautiful. It’s easy and fun”. The 10th standard students SEVAI Shanthi Matriculation Higher Secondary School wrote essays on importance of trees and several highlighted “Trees help us in many ways as they provide oxygen to us, This is a gas that is very essential for us because we cannot breathe any other gas except Oxygen. It purifies the air and makes the environment a pollution free place to live. Trees have roots which hold the soil and prevent soil erosion. In coastal areas they also prevent flood because the rivers waters rise due to rain or other reasons and they wear off the soil from the coast but when trees are there they hold the soil from being eroded and the rivers carry very less soil with them back. Trees are also provide us with medicines and various cosmetic products. Trees also provide us with various kinds of timber. It also provides us with money. It also gives us food items such as fruits. It provides shelter for animals and birds. Birds have their nests on trees and animals just place to sit under to protect themselves from sun. It also provides shade to us and protects us from the harmful UV rays of the sun.” Govin
