SEVAI Shanthi Matric Higher Secondary School observed National Girl Child Day on 24th January as National Girl Child Day on the theme of ‘Adolescent Girls: The School principal while speaking to adolescent girls spoke that adolescence is a critical phase in a girl’s life when she is on the doorstep of womanhood and the needs and concerns such as health, nutrition and education are to be attended to. The Adolescent Girls needs to be informed and empowered to be able to face the challenges of life such as the issue of Domestic Violence, Child Marriage, and girls child abuse etc. The School Principal said that all round development of the adolescent girl, taking care of their nutritional, health, life skills and awareness requirements that will empower Adolescent Girls and further emphasized that emphasized that it is very important that Adolescent Girls become aware of all the facts of life, have the right to education under RTE Act, and need to be aware of

their legal rights in order to be better prepared to face the numerous challenges in her life by adolescent girls. Principal Chitra emphasized the need to sensitise the parents about the special needs, both physical and emotional, of girls going through adolescence. She spoke about the fact that gender discrimination and conditioning, which starts from childhood itself, takes root in the minds of boys, as well as, girls and has long term consequences, therefore, it is important that it should be addressed early. She also appreciated the efforts of Gramium for bringing out an awareness short film “Akkam Pakkam”with the message on Committed to actively preventing child abuse with strong action against culprit who is associated with the family who abuses a child. Principal Chitra mentioned that the director of the movie Guna and Producer Gramium Narayanan have expressed message on the social responsibility for the prevention of Girl Child abuse as well as warning for parents those who neglect their girl child’s safely from culprits.-Govin
