SEVAI's Dasilnaickanoor Watershed project in Karur District is a shining example of community-led watershed management and soil conservationThis initiative has transformed over 400 acres of barren land into thriving, cultivated fields, benefiting local farmers and the environment through green coverage, contributing to Climate Action Adaptation.
*Key Strategies*
1. *Contour Bunding*: Stone-pitched contour bunds reduced soil erosion and increased water infiltration, laying the foundation for sustainable agriculture.
2. *Water Harvesting Structures*: With guidance from Dr. Mrs. Benjamine Oberoi, OFI, check dams, farm ponds, and percolation ponds were built to harvest rainwater and recharge groundwater, developing waterbodies.
3. *Agroforestry*: Trees were planted to stabilize soil, promote biodiversity, and provide fodder and timber.
4. *Soil Conservation Measures*: Techniques like mulching, cover cropping, and crop rotation reduced soil erosion and improved fertility.
*Impact*
- Over 400 acres transformed into cultivated fields, supporting food production and vegetable cultivation.
- 40 irrigation open wells deepened, with increased water levels due to waterbodies development.
- Local communities empowered through Participatory Rapid Appraisal (PRA) techniques, ensuring sustainability and ownership.
*Appreciation*
The success of this project is attributed to SEVAI functionaries Devendran, Sakthivel, and Vanitha, who worked closely with Mrs. Benjamine and OFI team. This achievement has improved local farmers' lives and inspired neighboring villages like Thotiyapatty to adopt similar sustainable practices πΏππΏ Govin
