Need of Forest Development -Farmers oriented in SEVAI.

"Farmers recently  trained at SEVAI Centre on Dasilnaickanoor Watershed Forest learned about the importance of forest development and its benefits for their livelihoods. Dr. K. Govindaraju, Founder/Director of SEVAI, emphasized the potential of integrating trees into farming practices, saying, "By adopting agroforestry, farmers can boost crop yields, improve soil health, and increase biodiversity. This approach can increase soil organic carbon by 21% and crop yields by up to 56% compared to conventional farming.
The benefits of forest development include:
- Climate Regulation: Trees regulate temperature and humidity, reducing extreme weather impacts.
- Soil Conservation: Tree roots prevent erosion and improve fertility.
- Water Management: Trees enhance soil structure and water retention.
- Diversified Income: Forest farming allows cultivation of high-value crops like medicinal herbs and mushrooms.
- Improved Livelihoods: Agroforestry can increase farmers' income.
For climate change adaptation, forests play a crucial role in:
- Carbon Sequestration: Absorbing carbon dioxide to mitigate climate change.
- Resilience: Agroforestry systems are more resilient to climate-related shocks.
- Biodiversity Conservation: Preserving diverse ecosystems and ecosystem services.
