In the aftermath of the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which ravaged coastal communities, SEVAI undertook a significant rehabilitation effort. The tsunami, triggered by a massive earthquake, caused widespread destruction in Poompuhar Village, displacing numerous fisherman families.
In response, SEVAI constructed 500 permanent houses in Poompuhar Village in 2006, specifically designed to withstand natural disasters. These earthquake-proof, fire-proof, and cyclone-proof shelters were built on lands allotted by the Government, providing a safe haven for affected families.
The houses were part of a larger effort to rehabilitate and empower tsunami-affected communities. Then Local Administration Minister Hon'ble M.K. Stalin inaugurated the newly constructed permanent houses, accompanied by Hon'ble Minister Suresh Rajan and local Member of Parliament Shri. Vijayan.
Dr.K.Govindaraju,Director, SEVAI handed over the key of the newly constructed homes to Hon'ble Minister of Local Administration.
This initiative not only provided shelter but also restored dignity to the affected families, enabling them to rebuild their lives.👍🌹
