Permanent shelters for Tsunami victims families in Nagapattinam and Karaikal by SEVAI.

SEVAI, a Trichy-based NGO, has made significant strides in building resilient shelters for tsunami-affected families in Tamil Nadu. Following the 2004 tsunami, SEVAI initiated the Tsunami Housing Reconstruction Programme, constructing around 1,270 concrete houses designed to withstand earthquakes, floods, and cyclones.

These shelters feature:
- *Earthquake-resistant design*: Reinforced concrete structures that flex during seismic activity
- *Flood-resistant construction*: Elevated foundations and waterproof materials
- *Cyclone-proof roofing*: Strong, aerodynamically designed roofs to withstand high winds

SEVAI's journey began in 2006 with a cost-effective duplex concrete shelter at their Nagapattinam centre. Dr. K. Govindaraju authored a book on construction management, and Senior IAS officer Smt. Shantha Sheela Nair's visit to the site encouraged SEVAI to scale up. Leveraging this experience, SEVAI constructed 1,270 shelters in Nagapattinam and Karaikal districts 👍.
