Goats are "Poor Man's Cow as they provide livelihood 🌿

SEVAI promotes goat rearing in Thottiyapatty village as a sustainable livelihood for landless families, marginal farmers, and especially women. Goats require minimal space and low investment, making them ideal for households without agricultural land. Often called the "poor man's cow," they provide income, food, and financial security. Goats reproduce quickly, often with twins or triplets, allowing families to grow their herd and sell animals when cash is needed for school fees, emergencies, or household expenses. Their milk and meat fetch good market prices, while goat milk, rich in protein, calcium, and vitamins, is easier to digest than cow's milk, helping combat malnutrition. Goats are low-maintenance, feeding on shrubs, kitchen waste, and common grazing lands, and their manure serves as organic fertilizer, reducing farming costs. Goat rearing also empowers women and marginalized groups by giving them control over care, management, and income. To strengthen the rural economy, SEVAI links goat rearing with value addition and market access, such as training farmers to process milk into cheese, yogurt, or ghee. Farmer producer groups enable collective bargaining for better prices, while connections to government schemes and microfinance provide veterinary care, insurance, and credit for herd expansion. By integrating skill development, market linkages, and eco-friendly practices, SEVAI builds stronger household incomes and more resilient, self-reliant villages. 🌿Govin

Post Campfire dinner was served in Banana Leaf to ICHEC team by SEVAI

On 18 February 2026, SEVAI hosted a dinner for the ICHEC Business School Brussels students' team after a campfire at SEVAI Shanthi Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Pettavaithalai. In keeping with Tamil Nadu's time-honored tradition, the meal was served on banana leaves — a practice reflecting deep cultural values of hospitality, purity, and connection to nature. The banana leaf is naturally clean, eco-friendly, and enhances the flavor of food, making meals feel more authentic and wholesome. Guests are welcomed with respect by offering meals on banana leaves, symbolizing abundance and care, with the belief that eating from a leaf brings health benefits and aligns with sustainable living. Comprehensive Village Development initiatives by Assist -HSBC

In Manaparai Block, Trichy District, the Climate Resilient Village Development Initiative, led by ASSIST with HSBC's support, has transformed rural livelihoods through sustainable agriculture, natural resource management, and community empowerment via Participatory Rapid Appraisal. In under two years, it introduced vermi-composting, land development, and eco-friendly production, while supporting landless laborers through goat rearing and large-scale fruit tree plantations. Tree plantation drives and conservation efforts expanded green cover, boosted biodiversity, improved soil health, and strengthened climate resilience. Waterbodies restoration, open well recharge systems, and green energy such as solar lights have directly benefited smallholders. Women's farmer groups emerged as leaders, advancing organic farming, nutrition, and household incomes. During a recent visit, Dr. J. Ranga Rao (Operational Director, ASSIST) and Mr. Michael (HSBC CSR representative), joined by Mrs. Vishnu (Head of HR, ASSIST), Mr. S. Paramasivan (Project Coordinator), project staff, and community leaders, heard how organic inputs improved family economies and food security. Beneficiaries expressed gratitude — a testament to the project's lasting, value-added impact on people and the planet. 🌿Govin

Prasiddhi, young representatives delivered a powerful address at India AI impact summit 2026

Prasiddhi, a young representative from Chennai, earned widespread appreciation for her remarkable participation at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, where she delivered a powerful address on safe, inclusive, and ethical AI for every child. Her work with UNICEF and Generation Unlimited, shaping the global mandate for safe AI by amplifying youth voices, has been hailed as truly inspiring. Congratulating her, Dr. K. Step by step tree growing process explained in SEVAI.

SEVAI grows healthy tree saplings and distributes them to farmers for planting under the SEVAI project. Project in-charge K. Sakthivel instructed field functionary Amala to emphasize quality plantation and tree raising, highlighting that tree plantation plays a vital role in environmental conservation. Healthy saplings are the foundation of successful plantation—they establish quickly, grow stronger, and survive stresses like drought, pests, and diseases. To plant them properly, choose healthy, disease-free saplings with strong roots and straight stems, preferably native species. Prepare the site by clearing weeds, rocks, and debris, then loosen the soil. Dig pits 2–3 times wider than the root ball, deep enough for roots, and space them 3–5 meters apart. Enrich the soil with compost, cow dung, or leaf mold, place the sapling upright, spread its roots, and fill with soil, pressing lightly to remove air pockets. Water immediately and continue regularly, especially in dry weeks. Add mulch to retain moisture, use tree guards if needed, and care for the saplings by watering, weeding, and monitoring for pests until they establish. 🌱
_Impact: Every healthy sapling planted today grows into a shield for tomorrow's environment._

Dignity of labour exemplified by ICHEC Business school Brussels.

The collaboration between ICHEC Business School students from Belgium and local skilled workers at SEVAI Allur, in building a community centre, beautifully exemplifies the dignity of labour. By working hands-on with masons, carpenters, and laborers, the students showed that every form of work—whether physical or intellectual—holds value and deserves respect. Their involvement broke stereotypes between "white-collar" and "blue-collar" jobs, highlighting humility, teamwork, and mutual appreciation. This partnership not only applied business knowledge but also nurtured stronger community bonds, proving that honest labour, in any form, builds both structures and solidarity.

Korai grass mat weaving promoted in SEVAI-OFI under Kalkari project 🌿

Korai mat weaving, a traditional craft of rural Tamil Nadu, is being revived at SEVAI Centre, Amoor, with support from SEVAI-OFI under the Kalkari Project. Using eco-friendly Korai reed, cultivated as a cash crop in Amoor, local women are trained in modern designs while preserving traditional techniques. The process includes seven steps: harvesting mature grass after 6–8 months, sun-drying until golden brown, sorting and stripping fibers, softening by soaking and beating, optional dyeing, weaving into mats, bags, or décor, and finishing with trimming, pressing, and quality checks. This initiative generates employment for trained women, providing sustainable income, boosting confidence, and creating market-ready products for local, urban, and export sale. Korai sleeping mats, in particular, are cool, comfortable, eco-friendly, durable, lightweight, and portable. They offer health benefits with firm support, preserve cultural heritage, and are multi-purpose—ideal for sleeping, seating, yoga, meditation, or as stylish floor décor.

SEVAI-OFI promotes motorised Tailoring

SEVAI, a Trichy-based NGO, has trained village young women in motorized tailoring, transforming hand-bag production at its centre in Amoor, a rural hub once dependent on labor-intensive hand stitching. With motorized machines, artisans now achieve faster stitching, uniform seam quality, and reduced physical strain, enabling large-scale production without compromising durability or design. This shift has diversified product range, allowing experimentation with fabrics, patterns, and styles to meet modern consumer demands. It has also created employment opportunities, especially for women  while expanding market reach with potential for exports. Though challenges like initial investment, training, and maintenance remain, support from bank loans and SHGs can help sustain growth. Dr. K. Govindaraju, Director of SEVAI, appreciated OFI for its support in training these young women in motorized tailoring.🌿

Promotion of Organic farming in Gudalur Panchayat in Thogamalai block by SEVAI-OFI under Alstom project

SEVAI-OFI under Alstom project has been empowering  farmers in Gudalur Panchayat in Thogamalai Block,Karur District villages through the promotion of household vermicompost units, encouraging the adoption of organic farming practices. On February 11th, Mr. Emanuel from OFI, Bangalore, Mr.K. Devendran, an organic farming expert with SEVAI, and Mrs. Vanitha Palanisamy, Women's Coordinator, along with local farmers and SHG members, visited these units to highlight the importance of vermicompost. This nutrient-rich organic manure, produced through earthworm activity, breaks down organic waste into a valuable resource. The benefits of vermicompost include being cost-effective, reducing reliance on chemical fertilizers, enriching soil structure, fertility, and water-holding capacity, and being environmentally friendly by recycling organic waste and reducing pollution. To prepare vermicompost, farmers collect organic waste, mix it with bedding material, add earthworms, maintain optimal conditions, and harvest after 30-45 days. Application involves mixing 2-5 kg of vermicompost per square meter of land, applying it at various crop stages, and using it as a top dressing or incorporating it into the soil. SEVAI-OFI's training programs educate  farmers on replicating these units, promoting sustainable agriculture and improving food production 🌿. Govin
